FAQ

Does Limner add anything to my level or my game?

Section titled “Does Limner add anything to my level or my game?”

No. The overlay, the views, the colour vision preview and the guides are drawn on the editor’s level viewport only. No actors, volumes or materials are added to the level, Play In Editor and packaged games are not affected, and boards are editor-only assets that are never cooked. Only Match colours writes post-process settings, when you click Apply, as one undoable step.

Does Match colours grade the scene for me?

Section titled “Does Match colours grade the scene for me?”

It matches the overall look of one frame to the reference: brightness, colour cast, saturation and contrast. Where the light falls stays your job; the value views and Compare’s hints show where the scene differs. See Match colours.

How accurate is the colour vision preview?

Section titled “How accurate is the colour vision preview?”

It uses the Machado, Oliveira and Fernandes (2009) model, the same family as Unreal’s own accessibility option, at 0 to 100 % severity. It is a design check, not a diagnosis. See Colour vision preview.

Inside the board asset. Nothing is imported as a texture and the board doesn’t depend on the original files, so everybody who gets the board through source control sees the same images. Images larger than Max Image Size (4096 px by default) are scaled down when they are added. See How images are stored.

They can all see it, but one person should edit it at a time. A board is a single binary asset, so changes can’t be merged: check it out before editing. For large teams, use a board per level or per area.

No. Photos, paintovers, screenshots of other games, mood paintings and viewport captures of your own scene all work as references. Camera links and the value views are useful in any level: environment art, lighting, game shots and archviz.

Select a reference and link it to a camera actor or a level bookmark. Whenever the viewport pilots that camera, Sequencer locks it to that camera, or you jump to that bookmark, the reference is shown by itself. See Camera and bookmark links.

Why doesn’t pasting an image work on Mac or Linux?

Section titled “Why doesn’t pasting an image work on Mac or Linux?”

Pasting image data from the clipboard is only supported on Windows. On Mac and Linux, save the image and drag the file onto the board, or copy the file’s path and paste it.

The overlay is drawn in the active perspective level viewport. Click into the viewport you want it in. Orthographic viewports never show it. Also check that the mode isn’t Off and that a reference is pinned or linked to the camera you look through.

What does the value structure score measure?

Section titled “What does the value structure score measure?”

The share of the frame that falls in the same value band (dark, mid, light with 3 bands) in the scene and the reference, compared on a coarse grid. Small offsets and texture detail don’t matter; the big shapes of light and dark do. See Compare.

Does the color script use Movie Render Queue?

Section titled “Does the color script use Movie Render Queue?”

No. Each frame is rendered in the level viewport after a few warm-up frames, at the viewport’s resolution. That is fast enough to rebuild after every lighting change, and shows the same lighting and post process you see in the viewport.

No. Palettes, comparisons and views are computed in the editor with classic image analysis. Nothing is sent anywhere.
