Clips

Players can record short clips with the same frame, stickers and logo as their photos: GIFs on every platform, MP4 videos on Windows. The camera can move by itself while recording, and the clip can loop forward or ping-pong. Clips have no sound.

  1. On the Clip tab, choose the format, length, frame rate, size, camera motion and loop. The Record clip button shows what you will get, for example “45 frames · about 2.5 MB”.

  2. Press Record clip, or set Capture button to Record clip and press Space (or Y).

  3. The menu hides while recording and is never in the clip; the frame, stickers and logo are. A red line shows the time, such as “REC 1.5 / 3.0 s”, with a bar.

  4. The clip stops by itself at the end. Press Space (Y) to stop early and keep the clip, or Esc (B) to cancel it.

  5. “Making GIF… 40%” (or “Making MP4 video…”) shows with a progress bar, then Clip saved with a thumbnail, the format, length and file size.

The rows are listed in The photo mode screen.

In single-player games (Frame By Frame, on by default) the engine runs a fixed time step while recording, so every frame of the clip is exactly one frame apart however slowly the PC renders; the game simply runs slower than real time for those seconds. The time step is put back afterwards, also when photo mode closes during a recording.

In network games, frames are taken as the game runs.

Motion What the camera does
Free You move the camera while the clip records.
Orbit Circles the selected character, or the locked focus point.
Dolly in, Dolly out Moves toward or away from what it looks at.
Pan Turns left to right.
Tilt Turns up.
Zoom in Narrows the field of view.
Crane up Rises straight up.

The camera starts where it is and comes back after recording. Motion amount sets how far it moves (shown in degrees, metres or as a zoom factor) and Smooth start and end eases the motion in and out. Loop: Ping-pong plays forward, then backward, so the clip loops without a jump.

  • One palette for the whole clip, an ordered dither that stays steady between frames (Gif Dither), and frames that store only what changed (Gif Frame Deltas), so files stay small.
  • All frames are kept in memory until the GIF is made. Max Clip Memory MB (256, 96 on mobile) shortens clips that would not fit: the Length row then stops earlier.
  • H.264 through Windows Media Foundation, the encoder that comes with Windows. Use Hardware Video Encoder lets Windows use the graphics card when it can.
  • Windows N editions without the Media Feature Pack have no encoder; the Clip tab then offers GIF only and the Format hint says why.
  • On other platforms clips are GIFs.

Clips go to the photo folder, named with Clip Prefix, for example Clip_2026-10-24_18-30-05.gif. The Thumbnails folder gets a poster thumbnail, a strip of small frames for the gallery and a JSON file. The gallery plays clips.
