FAQ
Do both editors need the plugin?
Section titled “Do both editors need the plugin?”Yes. Ferryman runs in both editors: one sends, the other reviews and lands. Every project that sends or receives needs it enabled.
Does it work between two projects on the same computer?
Section titled “Does it work between two projects on the same computer?”Yes. Open both projects; each editor appears on the other’s Editors page. Send, or copy in one Content Browser (Ctrl+C) and paste in the other (Ctrl+V).
Does it work over the internet?
Section titled “Does it work over the internet?”Yes, in two ways. A shared folder (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, a network share) works everywhere, with an optional code lock. A connection code connects two editors directly; that needs a VPN such as Tailscale or ZeroTier, or a forwarded port on the receiver’s router. There is no tridiART server in between.
Can it overwrite my work?
Section titled “Can it overwrite my work?”Not without you seeing it. Parcels from a machine you haven’t paired with, and any parcel that would replace something, wait for your review; you can also set it to always ask. Replaced assets are backed up in Saved/Ferryman/Backups, and if landing fails halfway everything is undone. See Reviewing arrivals.
How is this different from Migrate?
Section titled “How is this different from Migrate?”Migrate copies files into another project’s folder on the same disk, at the same paths, and overwrites what is there. Ferryman sends to an open editor anywhere, shows what is new, the same or different before anything is written, lets you land into another folder with references fixed up, keeps backups, can keep assets live-linked, and can rebuild assets in an older engine version.
Can I send assets to an older Unreal version?
Section titled “Can I send assets to an older Unreal version?”Partly. Unreal can’t load assets saved by a newer version, so Ferryman sends a recipe and rebuilds textures, static meshes and material instances in the older editor. Blueprints, master materials, levels, skeletal meshes and other types are reported as unable to land. See Older engine versions.
Does it send C++ classes or plugins?
Section titled “Does it send C++ classes or plugins?”No. Assets travel, code doesn’t. The plugins and C++ modules the assets need are listed in the review so you know what to install.
Can I send levels?
Section titled “Can I send levels?”Yes, between editors with the same or a newer engine version. Levels that keep their actors in separate files (World Partition, One File Per Actor) travel with those files. Levels can’t go back to an older engine.
How much can sound carry?
Section titled “How much can sound carry?”Little: from about 11 bytes per second (Robust) to about 180 (Fast). That is enough for material parameters, actor placement or a short note. For assets, sound carries a ticket and the assets come over the network. Sound is meant for two machines next to each other, not two editors on one computer. See Sound.
Is it safe to accept assets from others?
Section titled “Is it safe to accept assets from others?”Machines pair once with four check words shown on both sides, transfers are encrypted, and you review every arrival before it is written to your project. Only accept parcels from people you trust. See Security.
The other machine doesn’t show up. What now?
Section titled “The other machine doesn’t show up. What now?”Allow Unreal Editor through the firewall for private networks on both machines, and check that Enable Network is on. Some routers and Wi-Fi networks block the multicast announcement between devices; then use a connection code with the receiver’s local address, or the dock.
Does it add anything to my game?
Section titled “Does it add anything to my game?”No. Ferryman is an editor plugin; it isn’t packaged with your game. What lands is a normal asset of your project, with nothing that ties it to Ferryman.
Can I share Fab or Marketplace assets with it?
Section titled “Can I share Fab or Marketplace assets with it?”Assets keep their license. Share them only with people who work on the same project with you, as the license allows.
Which platforms does it run on?
Section titled “Which platforms does it run on?”The editor on Windows, Mac and Linux, with Unreal Engine 5.6, 5.7 and 5.8. It has been tested on Windows. Editors on different platforms can exchange parcels.
How much does Ferryman cost?
Section titled “How much does Ferryman cost?”Ferryman is sold on Fab under the Fab Standard License:
- Personal license: $19.99, for individuals and companies with up to $100,000 gross revenue in the last 12 months.
- Professional license: $49.99, above that.
Ferryman is not open source, but its full C++ source code ships with the plugin, so you can build it for your engine version. Get it from ta Ferryman on Fab.
Where do I get help?
Section titled “Where do I get help?”Write to support@tridiart.com. Include your engine version, what you did and, if possible, the Output Log lines of the LogTAFerryman category.
