Connection codes
A connection code connects two editors that don’t find each other on their own: in another office, at home, across the internet. The receiver makes the code and gives it to the sender. The code holds the receiver’s address and port and a secret that encrypts the transfer, so only someone with the code can send.
Receive with a code
Section titled “Receive with a code”-
Open the Code page.
-
Under Reach this editor at, check the address the sender should use. It starts with this machine’s first network address; This machine’s addresses lists all of them, including VPN addresses.
- Over a VPN, pick the VPN address (Tailscale addresses start with
100.). - Over the open internet, press Find public address. Ferryman asks a public STUN server which address this machine has on the internet and tells you which TCP port to forward to this machine on your router.
- Over a VPN, pick the VPN address (Tailscale addresses start with
-
Press Make a code and give the code to the sender, for example in a chat. Copy puts it on the clipboard.
A code looks like K8Q2M-7TZ4D-.... It is valid for an hour, for any number of parcels. Parcels sent with it land like parcels from a paired machine, so they follow the Review Arrivals setting. A code made from Python (create_connection_code) also shows up on the Code page while it is valid.
Send with a code
Section titled “Send with a code”- Select assets or folders in the Content Browser.
- On the Code page, paste the receiver’s code under Send with a code.
- Press Send.
The transfer appears on the Transfers page like any other, and the receiver gets the usual notification.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”- The transfer fails to connect. The receiver’s address isn’t reachable from your machine. Over a VPN, check that both machines are connected to it and that you used the VPN address. Over the internet, check the port forwarding and that the receiver’s firewall allows Unreal Editor.
- “Unknown or expired connection code.” Codes expire after an hour. Ask for a new one, also when the receiving editor was restarted in the meantime.
- Different networks inside one company. If the editors can reach each other but multicast doesn’t pass between the networks, a code works without a VPN: use the receiver’s normal address.
